First Semi

The world's first semi-solid lithium-ion battery architecture will be used in Japanese electronics company Kyocera's new launching Enerezza residential storage fleet, which can greatly improve the economics of the battery and accelerate the price revolution of battery energy storage. It will be the first company to bring this technology to market, according to foreign media reports.

Kyocera Corporation has announced that the latest residential energy storage equipment's battery is based on a semi-solid-state battery architecture, which will begin mass production this fall. The battery for energy storage products comes from the US start-up company 24M.

In June 2019, Kyocera Corporation piloted the battery manufacturing process together with 24M, which has championed a new approach to lithium-ion customized tungsten carbide battery production developed by MIT researcher Yet-Ming Chiang. Chiang founded 24M in 2010 to bring the technology to market and last year the manufacturer began pilot runs to validate real-world efficiency. It is understood that 24M company owns a significant advantage in the list of structural materials, and the required up-front funds will be greatly reduced.

The energy storage product is available in 5 kWh, 10 kWh, and 15 kWh models. Kyocera claims that this new process can significantly reduce production costs. Material costs for semi-solid batteries are around 40% lower than for standard lithium-ion battery architecture and the manufacturing time is two-thirds shorter, because in semi-solid lithium-ion battery electrodes, the electrolyte is mixed with materials to form a clay-like slurry, eliminating the need for a binder. Honeywell and DTEK to Build Grid

To build the first grid-scale lithium-ion battery energy storage system, US equipment manufacturer and engineering solutions provider Tungsten Carbide Rods Single Hole Honeywell and DTEK, Ukraine's largest private-sector energy company, have announced an agreement to launch Honeywell's Experion® Energy Program. According to foreign media reports.

DTEK Group produces coal and natural gas, generates electricity at thermal, solar and wind power plants, distributes electricity, supplies electricity tungsten carbide strips to end consumers, provides energy efficient solutions and develops a network of EV charging stations. DTEK announced that it plans to deploy this battery energy storage project and will deploy a 1MW/1.5MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Zaporizhzhya thermal power plant that the company is operating. The energy storage system will provide frequency control services for the local grid, and carry out energy arbitrage during periods of off-peak power demand, and discharge when power demand is high.

The company stated that the experience and knowledge gained from best practices will be shared with other stakeholders.

Although DTEK hopes to use the Honeywell's lithium-ion battery energy storage system to learn more about decarbonization, increase the flexibility of the grid, and improve the quality and stability of the grid, the current Ukraine’s regulations do not allow the energy storage system to be matched with renewable energy power generation facilities. However, the company said in a press release that it is considering the possibility of supporting deployment.

It is reported that researchers from the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have designed a low-dimensional metallic MoS2 composite membrane, which can achieve high-efficiency osmotic energy conversion due to its high ionic conductivity and excellent mechanical properties. Exploration of the application viability of MoS2 in a more robust macroscopic-scale two-dimensional (2D) nanofluidic membrane and nonstandard tungsten carbide rods acquisition of fundamentals of how the phase structure influences the power generation process are highly demanded.

Robust and stable composite membranes made up of 2D metallic MoS2 can act as high-performance osmotic power generators. Both experiments and simulations reveal that the higher electron density of metallic MoS2 increases the affinity of cations to the surface, which renders the system excellent ion selectivity and high ionic flux and greatly promotes transmembrane ion diffusion. When natural river water and seawater are mixed, the power density can achieve about 6.7 W m–2. This work shows the great potential of metallic MoS2 in nanofluidic energy devices.

The osmotic energy between seawater and river water is a kind of renewable energy. The total amount of osmotic energy that can be collected in the world is twice the annual hydroelectric power generation. Reverse electrodialysis technology is an effective method to convert salt difference energy into electrical energy. Although its application prospects are good, it is widely used in real life due to the poor performance of core membrane modules.

Researchers have developed a high-strength and stable two-dimensional MoS2 composite membrane, which is composed of high-concentration metal phase MoS2 nanosheets and one-dimensional nanocellulose (CNF). Studies have shown that when man-made river water and seawater are mixed, the output power density of the composite membrane can reach 5.2W/m2. Compared to the semiconductor phase molybdenum disulfide membrane, the electron density of the high-concentration metal phase molybdenum disulfide membrane is higher.
